Satire Classes and Consultations

If you’ve been wanting to learn more about satire, improve your own writing, or get into some of the best publications out there, you’ve come to the right place.

Joanna’s satire has been featured by Time, The Hill, The Belladonna, Funny or Die, WhoHaha, and more. She is a former staff writer for Top Story Weekly; a standup and sketch performer with iO West and UCB; a regular contributor to McSweeney’s and other online publications; and co-writer of the sold-out show Fox News the Musical.

Now, she’s offering two ways to learn about and improve your satire: Her class The Basics of Satire; and in-depth private consultations.

The Basics of Satire

A four-week class designed for writers who want to publish short satire and/or incorporate satire into longer works.

In this class we cover:

  • The four types of satire

  • The main elements of satire

  • How to hone your point of view

  • Developing character and voice

  • And much more

You will leave this class with plenty of laughs, a deeper understanding of the art of satire, a rough draft of a new short-form piece, and a strategy for incorporating satire into other writing projects.

Praise for The Basics of Satire from former students:

Exceptional! Joanna brought enthusiasm, knowledge, and organized presentations to each class. Her carefully chosen examples to illustrate concepts were most helpful.
You don’t usually get someone who’s as compassionate, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, open as an artist, and skilled in putting together an inspiring mix of observation and action.
Rich, thought-provoking ideas. It kept me awake and sitting still and sparked ideas that I worked on after. I didn’t doodle a single mystical animal or do any Kegels during this class.

Satire Consultations

Private sessions to discuss in detail a specific part of your writing process.

Options include:

  • Feedback on drafts

  • Punch-ups for late drafts

  • Focused work on a specific skill

For each session, Joanna will look over the work or goals in advance and prepare a 30-min discussion based on your specific questions.

Cost: $50
Discounts may be available for a limited time.

Longer discussions and feedback sessions on longer drafts available. Cost TBD (based on length of project and feedback requested).

Praise for Joanna’s consultations:

I have read satire but figured there was some kind of magic behind it. It was something other people could do, but not me.

I just had never thought about how to access it or do it consciously or realized it could come so naturally.
— Janesse Leung (published in Slackjaw two weeks after first consultation)
